Not Your Average Sunbonnet Sue

This is a quilt that I made. The grown up Sue and her dog’s collar are embellished with rhinestones. I attached a necklace chain to the quilt as a leash.

The pattern for this Flapper Girl Sue walking her dog can be found in my book Beautiful Big Dogs.

The Chickasha quilt show this past weekend had a special exhibit dedicated to sunbonnet quilts. It was very interesting to see all the variations of this popular traditional design. The yellow one (above) was my favorite. Not only do we get to see Sue’s face, but it looks like she is working on some embroidery designs in a hoop. I also like the way it combines embroidery with applique.

Green Bonnet Girl

This green girl was also very nice. Sue has embroidered hands and feet but all the rest is applique. This quilt had 20 or so Sue blocks and each one had a different color scheme.

I thought the quilt below was a little odd. It looks like Sue is Goose-Stepping (maybe skipping?) and the quilt was probably made in the 1940’s or 1950’s judging by the fabric in the dresses.

I made this little baby quilt from an old Sunbonnet Sue block that I purchased from a flea market. The background fabric was very thin and cut right up next to the applique. So close in fact that there was no way to have a seam allowance. So I appliqued it to a new background fabric so that it was usable. The setting for this baby quilt can be found HERE.

I like that one too. She's wearing pantaloons. I guess that's what those are! 🙂

I love all the colors in the last quilt. I think she is supposed to be skipping, but the legs are not quite right. Skipping is def the sense of movement that I perceived when I first saw it.

Oooh! I love the green one! LOL – the goose stepping one is a little strange – perhaps the flowers are meant to offset the menace.
